Date: 2010-05-05 01:28 am (UTC)5. I started chafing against Catholicism pretty early in life. I think I was about 12 when I first picked up the Tarot, and I was 15 when I demanded that my Mom let me stop going to our Church every Sunday. She said that while I was living with her I had to go to church at least once a month, so that was our compromise. And I did that, until our priest got accused of molesting a child, and I pretty much had a knock-down, drag-out fight with Mom about the hypocrisy that was rampant in the church. From the priest-molesters at the grassroots level to the administration that was helping to hide them, to the previous hypocrisies that happened in the past with the popes and buying indulgences and all that. I threw it ALL at her. She hadn't realized I'd delved into all that, and her eyes were just all O.O at me. She finally said "if you think there's a religion out there that doesn't have that kind of thing, go find it."
I told her I didn't WANT religion, and I walked away from all religions for a while. I explored paganism, played with the tarot, explored energy work, and then fell in love with a Pentecostal guy who dragged me back to church for a while. *laugh* I got over that, thankfully. I finally settled on the whole pagan thing after a fairly magical experience after I had a car accident. I suppose it could be explained by a head injury, but I still maintain I had a vision, so... :)
