liandriel: (Oops!)
My granddad passed away tonight. He and Grandmother were sitting in their room at the Commons after dinner, and she noticed that he was slumped over and didn't look "right". She rang for help; the staff called emergency services, which took him to the hospital on the mainland. They tried to resuscitate him -- why, I'm not sure.

He went peacefully. He was already gone when Grandmother called the nurse.

While this isn't altogether unexpected, it was very sudden and caught us off-guard. In accordance with his wishes, he'll be cremated, and his ashes will be buried on the Island, probably next to his sister's. As for a memorial service, while some of us would like to have a small one soon, others are inclined to wait for the big one this summer, when those Islanders who knew Granddad will be around. (There are very few year-round Island residents; most just spend summers there.)

Dad's in shock. Grandmother sounded OK when he talked to her, but he thinks she's going to be lonelier than she realizes at the moment; the staff at the Commons looked to Grandmother and Granddad as examples of how they wanted their marriages to be later in life. They fell asleep holding hands every night.

When they were living more independently, she would have been absolutely lost without him. She may yet be. Dad speculated that she might not make it through the week.

The first of my grandparents has died.
